Senior High School Information and Communication Technology "Productivity"

If you have an ecology research report coming due, RiverWatch is the place to go!

Participation in the RiverWatch Science Program can forge a great fit with the Alberta Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Curriculum especially in the area of "Productivity" where senior high students will:

Compose, revise and edit text; continue to demonstrate the outcomes achieved in prior grades and course subjects (Division 4/P1)

Preparing Field Trip Reports
The practical aim of the RiverWatch Science Program is to have students investigate and answer the question, "Is this river healthy?" There is an authentic opportunity here to generate the answer in a report or presentation following the field trip.

Organize and manipulate data through the selection of appropriate tools such as scientific instrumentation, calculators, databases and/or spreadsheets (Division 4/P2)

On-Line Data Entry and Charting
The RiverWatch Web Site features a data entry interface designed to store and chart information from the thousands of field trip data sheets produced over many years of river monitoring! The field trip database produces charts of amazing quality based on parameters chosen by the student!

Communicate through multimedia; select and use, independently, multimedia capabilities for presentations in various subject areas; support communication with appropriate images, sounds and music; and apply general principles of graphic layout and design to a document in process (Division 4/P3)

Presenting Field Trip Reports
The practical aim of the River Watch Science Program is to have students investigate and answer the question,
"How healthy is our local river?"
There is an authentic opportunity here to generate the answer in a report or presentation communicated within the school, or even to have it communicated externally to appropriate officials and stakeholder organizations in the community.

Integrate various applications; integrate a variety of visual and audio information into a document to create a message targeted for a specific audience; apply principles of graphic design to enhance meaning and audience appeal; use integrated software effectively and efficiently to reproduce work that incorporates data, graphics and text (Division 4/P4)

Stewardship Messages
Once RiverWatch students have made a determination of their river's health, an authentic opportunity arises to create pro-active conservation or management messages targeted at peers or the public though various multimedia formats.

Navigate and create hyperlinked resources; create multiple-link documents appropriate to the content of a particular topic; post multiple-link pages on the World Wide Web or on a local or wide area network (Division 4/P5)

Linkages
Once RiverWatch students have made a determination of river health, an authentic opportunity arises to use school web pages to communicate river health data along with proactive conservation and management messages, or even to have these messages linked through stakeholder web pages within the community.

Use communication technology to interact with others; select and use the appropriate technologies to communicate effectively with a targeted audience (Division 4/P6)

Communication Opportunities
The RiverWatch Web Site provides many opportunities to use information and communication technology in an authentic and relevant context, including a discussion board and charts useful in the creation of field trip reports and stewardship messages.
