Senior High School Information and Communication Technology "Communicating"

RiverWatch charting is a really great research tool!

Participation in the RiverWatch Science Program can forge a great fit with the ICT curriculum especially in the area of "Communicating" where senior high students will:

Access, use and communicate information from a variety of technologies; communicate in a persuasive and engaging manner, through appropriate forms, such as speeches, letters, reports and multimedia presentations, applying information technologies for content, audience and purpose that extend and communicate understanding of complex issues (Division 4/C1)

Presenting Field Trip Reports
The practical aim of the RiverWatch Science Program is to have students investigate and answer the question, "Is this river healthy?" There is an authentic opportunity here to generate the answer in a report or presentation communicated within the school, or even to have it communicated externally to appropriate officials and stakeholder organizations in the community.

Seek alternative viewpoints, using information technologies; consult a wide variety of sources that reflect varied viewpoints on particular topics; evaluate the validity of gathered viewpoints against other sources (Division 4/C2)

Evaluating Viewpoints
The entire RiverWatch Science Program, including the web site, is designed to give students access to local river experts, assist them in identifying patterns in collected data and then encourage the use of those patterns to construct a personal viewpoint on river health. "Is our local river healthy? Why or why not?" This viewpoint is then tested or altered against published viewpoints obtained from other stakeholder groups involved with the river.

Use technology to aid collaboration during inquiry; use telecommunications to pose critical questions to experts; participate in a variety of electronic group formats (Division 4/C5)

Discussion Board
The RiverWatch Web Site features a discussion board titled "RiverTalk" designed to assist students seeking expert advice or wishing to compare findings and enthusiasm with students in other schools.

Use technology to investigate and/or solve problems; investigate and solve problems of organization and manipulation of information; manipulate data by using charting and graphing technologies in order to test inferences and probabilities; generate new understandings of problematic situations by using some form of technology to facilitate the process; evaluate the appropriateness of the technology used to investigate or solve a problem (Division 4/C6)

On-Line Data Entry and Charting
The entire RiverWatch Science Program, including the web site, is designed to help students investigate and determine the answer to the problem, "Is this river healthy?" The RiverWatch Web Site features a student-centered data entry interface designed to store and chart information from the thousands of school field trip data sheets produced over many years of River Watch monitoring.

Use electronic research techniques to construct personal knowledge and meaning and use appropriate strategies to locate information to meet personal needs (Division 4/C7)

A Research Tool
The entire RiverWatch Science Program, including the web site, is a research tool designed to give students…
  • access to first-hand data
  • interaction with local river experts
  • assistance in identifying patterns in charted data
  • an opportunity to construct personal knowledge of river health
