Junior High School Information and Communication Technology "Productivity"

If you have an ecology research report coming due, RiverWatch is the place to go!

Participation in the RiverWatch Science Program can forge a great fit with the Alberta Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Curriculum, especially in the area of "Productivity" where junior high students will:

Compose, revise and edit text; design a document, using style sheets and with attention to page layout, that incorporates advanced word processing techniques, including headers, footers, margins, columns, table of contents, bibliography and index; use advanced world processing menu features to accomplish a task; for example, insert a table, graph or text from another document; revise text documents based on feedback from others; use appropriate communication technology to elicit feedback from others (Division 3/P1)

Preparing Field Trip Reports
The practical aim of the RiverWatch Science Program is to have students investigate and answer the question,
"Is this river healthy?"
There is an authentic opportunity here to generate the answer in a report or presentation following the field trip.

Organize and manipulate data; design, create and modify a database for a specific purpose; and use a variety of technological graphing tools to draw graphs for data involving one or two variables (Division 3/P2)

On-Line Data Entry and Charting
The RiverWatch Web Site features a data entry interface designed to store and chart information from the thousands of field trip data sheets produced over many years of river monitoring! The field trip database produces charts of amazing quality based on parameters chosen by the student.

Communicate through multimedia; create multimedia presentations that take into account audiences of diverse size, age, gender, ethnicity and geographic location; and create multimedia presentation that incorporate meaningful graphics, audio, video and text gathered from remote sources (Division 3/P3)

Presenting Field Trip Reports
The practical aim of the RiverWatch Science Program is to have students investigate and answer the question,
"Is this river healthy?"
There is an authentic opportunity here to generate the answer in a report or presentation communicated within the school environment, or even have it communicated externally to appropriate officials and stakeholder organizations in the community.

Navigate and create hyperlinked resources; create a multiple-link web page (Division 3/P5)

Linkages
Once RiverWatch students have made a determination of river health, an authentic opportunity arises to use school web pages to communicate river health data along with proactive conservation and management messages, or even to have these messages linked from stakeholder web pages within the community.

Use communication technology to interact with others; communicate with a targeted audience, within a controlled environment, by using such communication technologies as email and web browsers (Division 3/P6)

Discussion Board
The RiverWatch Web Site features a discussion board titled "RiverTalk" designed to assist students seeking expert advice or wishing to compare findings and enthusiasm with students in other schools.
