Junior High School Information and Communication Technology "Communicating"
Participation in the RiverWatch Science Program can forge a great fit with the ICT curriculum especially in the area of "Communicating" where junior high students will:
Access, use and communicate information from a variety of technologies; communicate in a persuasive and engaging manner, through appropriate forms, such as speeches, letters, reports and multimedia presentations, applying information technologies for content, audience and purpose (Division 3/C1)
Presenting a Field Trip Report
The practical aim of the RiverWatch Science Program is to have students investigate and answer the question, "Is this river healthy?" There is an authentic opportunity here to generate the answer in a report or presentation communicated within the school, or even to have it communicated externally to appropriate officials and stakeholder organizations in the community. |
Seek alternative viewpoints, using information technologies; use information technology to find facts that support or refute diverse viewpoints (Division 3/C2)
Evaluating Viewpoints
The entire RiverWatch Science Program, including the web site, is designed to give students access to local river experts, assist them in identifying patterns in collected data and then encourage the use of those patterns to construct a personal viewpoint on river health.
"Is our local river healthy? Why or why not?"
This viewpoint is then tested or altered against published viewpoints obtained from other stakeholder groups involved with the river. |
Use organizational processes and tools to manage inquiry, such as developing a process to manage volumes of information that can made available through electronic sources (Division 3/C4)
On-Line Data Entry and Charting
The River Watch Web Site features a data entry interface designed to store and chart information from the thousands of field trip data sheets produced over many years of river monitoring! |
Use technology to aid collaboration during inquiry to brainstorm, plan and share ideas with group members (Division 3/C5)
A Discussion Board
The RiverWatch Web Site features a discussion board "RiverTalk" designed to assist students seeking expert advice or wishing to compare findings and enthusiasm with students in other schools! |
Use technology to investigate and/or solve problems (Division 3/C6)
Investigating A Real Life Problem
The entire RiverWatch Science Program, including the web site, is designed to help students investigate and determine the answer to the problem…
"Is this river healthy?"
This very real life problem is increasingly in the news as communities express concern over the safety of their drinking water. |
Use electronic research techniques to construct personal knowledge and meaning and identify patterns in organized information (Division 3/C7)
A Research Tool
The entire RiverWatch Science Program, including the web site, is a research tool designed to give students…
access to first-hand data
interaction with local river experts
assistance in identifying patterns in charted data
an opportunity to construct personal knowledge of river health
