The Effects of Increased Phosphorus

This fisherman has waded out past a weed-choked shoreline
Phosphorus is usually dissolved in such low concentrations that it limits the growth of aquatic plants. However, even a slight increase in phosphorus can result in increased plant and algae growth.

How can increased plant growth be harmful? When plant growth is increased, eventually the large masses of plant material die, decompose and rob the water of dissolved oxygen. The end result is the death of invertebrates and fish.
