Web Site
The RiverWatch Web Site provides behind-the-scenes support to make river monitoring a quality experience for Alberta science students. Everything necessary to prepare students for the field trip is easily accessible on-line. The site is also designed to process and analyze the collected data after the field trip.
The RiverWatch Web Site is a value-added feature that further enhances field trip learning:
- Background theory and standard procedures for each water quality test are easily available for study before and after a field trip.
- Students enter their field trip data on-line back at school. Detailed river maps and a series of user-friendly screen-prompts help to ensure that data is entered accurately and completely.
- The web site allows students to pool data together with other schools rather than working in isolation. Data is collected throughout a season, over the years and along the length of a river. This "big picture" provides a better indication of river health.
- The use of on-line charting software empowers students to select and graph relevant data, compare seasons, examine trends over the years and draw conclusions. The result is students that can direct their own learning.
- A bulletin board allows students to ask questions, present their findings and enter into discussions with students and staff at other schools. The opportunities for learning are extended well beyond the field trip day.
